Dot NAME Domain Names

Introduced in 2001, the .NAME generic top-level domain name extension is the only one planned for personal websites only. These domain names can be personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other labels people are popular by. At first, just third-level registrations were allowed, so if you planned to register john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already taken third-level domains remained functional.
